Kitchens That Are Old Enough to Look Tired and Young Enough to Keep
Shoppingthemusical is a kitchen remodeling contractor in Riverside, and most of the kitchens we work in were built between the mid 1990s and the late 2000s. Drive through Orangecrest or Mission Grove and you will see why. Thousands of homes went up in a short span, and their kitchens came from the same handful of builder packages: stained maple or oak veneer doors, granite or tile tops, an island with a bar ledge, and a microwave over the range.
Twenty years on, a lot of those kitchens look their age. The stain has gone orange in the sun, the hinges have loosened, and the backsplash is a strip of stone that nobody chose on purpose. Owners reasonably assume the answer is to tear everything out. Sometimes it is. More often, the cabinet boxes are dry and square, the layout is sensible, and the plumbing and gas are exactly where they should be. Replacing all of that to change the way the room looks is an expensive way to get a result refacing can reach.
How We Approach a Job
We start with an inspection, not a design board. Doors open, drawers out, a flashlight in the sink base and a hand on the shelves. We check the wall behind the splash and look at how the countertop was set. We note the direction of the window, because in Riverside a west facing kitchen takes hard afternoon sun, and that limits which finishes will hold their color.
Then we write down three lists: what is sound and should stay, what is worn and should change, and what could change but does not need to. The quote follows those lists, and you can take items off it. Work that needs a permit, like new circuits or a ducted hood, goes through the City of Riverside, and we tell you before the contract which items those are.
What We Will Not Do
We will not recommend new cabinets when refacing will do, move a sink to fill a quote, or promise a start date before your doors and tile have actually shipped. If the right answer for your house is a full remodel, we will tell you that plainly, even if it means the job is bigger than the one you called about.
